Who qualifies for an Opportunity Scholarship?

The Nevada Opportunity Scholarship Program mirrors successful tax credit programs that have been available in many other states for a number of years. To be eligible for a scholarship of up to $9,424 for K-12 private school tuition and fees for the 2023- 2024 school year, household income must not exceed 300% of the poverty level.

For example, a family of four making less than $83,250 (in 2023) per year could qualify for this scholarship. *Please use this link as a reference for the Poverty Guidelines for 2023. Each scholarship granting organization accepting the scholarship reserves its right to have different rules and regulations. Also, a household can be defined as anyone residing in the same household as you. For example, this could mean a grandmother or aunt residing in your residence.

How do Opportunity Scholarships work?

Children whose families meet the income guidelines are eligible to receive Opportunity Scholarships up to $8,726 per student per year.  The Nevada Department of Education is responsible for determining the maximum amount of scholarship funding any one student may receive based on the Consumer Price Index. In 2022- 2023, the funding provided on behalf of any one student could not exceed $8,726.

There are six approved Scholarship Granting Organizations (SGOs) in Nevada. These organizations determine when the applications are available, review the applications, and award scholarships. Usually, applications open at the beginning of each year between January and March. We recommend to parents that they start checking each of the six SGOs websites below no later than January and get familiar with the application process.

The SGOs award on a first-come, first-serve basis. Families can apply to all of the Nevada SGOs and we recommend doing just that. This way families have more chances of obtaining a scholarship. Lastly, families can accept more than one scholarship but cannot accept more than the maximum amount allowed per scholarship.

Click on this list or the logos below to see each registered Scholarship Granting Organization. Their websites explain their application process and enrollment periods. Please note that we do not handle applications. Families must check directly with each of the SGOS to apply or to find out the status of the application.

NOTE: All SGOs serve the entire state of Nevada

You can learn more about the program on the Nevada Department of Education website.
